ON Friday the 29th of March, in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the Spring Equinox (also known as the Vernal Equinox). It’s a point in the year where the day and night are equal and perfectly balanced. After that, we tip over into the days becoming longer and the weather becoming warmer.

Seeds are sparked into life – insects emerge from their dormancy – life becomes visible again.

Sap is rising in the trees; leaves are stretching towards the strengthening sunlight.

Bees stumble over blossom, harvesting all they can in these early months.

This is a point of transformation – a threshold.

A moment of stillness before the momentum of nature’s growth gathers at pace.

A liminal space between winter and spring, dark and light, death and rebirth.

On the equinox itself, it feels like nature holds her breath for a moment, taking stock of all that has been and all that is to come.

This liminal space offers us the opportunity to become equally still for a short while. Even a few minutes of chosen stillness can connect to the same energy happening in the natural world.

Watching the sun rise or set is a wonderful way of connecting to this energy. Spending even a few minutes watching the sky and the landscape at dawn or dusk is part of our wiring as humans. It’s a simple way to reset our nervous system and revive our ancestral relationship with the earth.

The liminal time also creates a good space for divination. The Spring equinox is a useful time for readings that give you the ‘big picture’ – such as:

  • Taking stock of a situation and reflecting on options to move things forward

  • Choosing what to leave behind as you move to the next part of the year

  • Reflecting on all that you’ve learned over the winter

  • Getting the overview of various areas of your life

I’ve created a simple card spread for moving a situation forwards. It’s free and it’s available here if you want to download it. Let me know how you get on if you try it out.

If you like to burn incense as part of your reading and divination time, there are some beautiful blends available. Anything that has springtime plants in the mix is even better. I often make my own loose incense, and I thought I’d share an adapted version of a blend I used to sell on our stall.

You can download my free recipe for a Spring Equinox Loose Incense Blend.

It’s a light, simple mix of ingredients that represent the crossover or threshold nature of this time of the year. It’s perfect for burning while you’re doing a reading or simply having a moment of stillness.

You can use the exact ingredients, or you can adapt it to what you have. It’s about being involved in the process, not being ‘perfect’.

If you’re not familiar with using loose incense, you can download my simple free guide.

I wish you a wonderful Spring Equinox and here’s to the rising energy of Spring infusing our magic with renewed life!
