Ask Yourself the Following Questions…

Have you ever found yourself in a place that feels a bit “extra” than other places?

Ever been to a sacred site and felt the power in the landscape itself?

Maybe you’ve felt as though you weren’t alone in some places, even though there was no one else around?

Have you ever liked or disliked a place for no obvious reason?

Found yourself repeatedly returning somewhere because it simply feels like home?

If you answered yes to even one of these questions, chances are you’ve experienced what’s known as ‘spirit of place’. It’s a term for an ancient awareness of sensing and working with the specific energies and spiritual presence of a location.

And it’s super-powerful.

What’s ‘Spirit of Place’ When It’s at Home? (Excuse The Pun)

Put simply, it’s the spiritual character of a specific geographical place. It’s the heart, soul and sometimes a literal spirit of that place (hence the term’ spirit of place’).

This can include qualities such as

· A felt presence – such as gods, goddesses, The Fae or other magical beings.

· A sense (or evidence) of spiritual power

· A feeling of distinctly different energy from other nearby places

· A sense of the place having a consciousness of its own

Where Does the Idea Come From?

This isn’t a new concept invented by modern pagans or spiritual influencers. The awareness of this phenomenon grew up alongside humanity itself. From the earliest spiritual paths, tribes and cultures across the world identified places that housed important energy — land spirits, water spirits, ancestor presences.

We can see these sacred places throughout our spiritual history, such as:

· Uluru in Australia

· Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia

· Glastonbury Tor in England

· Sedona Vortexes in Arizona

· The Tibetan Buddhist Temple Caves in Bhutan

· Es Vedra rock formation in Ibiza

Over the centuries, it has been given many names and descriptions, including:

· Genius loci – Latin phrase meaning ‘spirit of place’ used by Romans

· Numen – another Latin word for ‘divine presence’ use by the Romans (more connected to animism than specific places)

· Kami - Japanese Shinto term for the nature deities of a place

· Landvættir - Norse/Germanic for land or guardian spirits

· Anima loci - soul of a place

· Psychogeography - scientific study of the influence our geographical environment has on our emotions

· Egregore - the idea that a spiritual entity can be created in a place by collective human emotions over time

Why Does It Matter?

In my experience, it’s important to remember that I am connected to everything. I am part of nature, not a separate entity. We are all nature’s beings, although we’d be forgiven for forgetting this, with our modern lifestyles.

Where I live, the energy of the land is variable. In some areas it’s very dense and heavy. In others it’s more buoyant. In the places with heavier energy, I’ve noticed it feels lighter when there are fewer people around.

That alone tells me something — that the spirits of place are responsive, not static. They feel us. They respond to us.

In my experience, the spirit of place — or the energies of a place — is a blend of ancient and modern. There are ancient energies that resonate through all time, and then there is the place’s response to how it’s been treated across different eras.

Some spots are the thin places. Some feel thick and heavy. Some feel jaunty. Some feel almost fizzy. You may feel drawn to one place over another for no reason you can name rationally.

There are thousands of resources out there offering information on what magic is and what we can do with it. And I’ve read most of them. That’s part of the problem — after some years exploring magic in the wild, I found that as more books came onto the market, I ended up becoming more about reading than doing. After a while, I was reading more and experiencing less. It began to dry up my magical juices, so to speak.

Whenever I’m feeling disconnected or all magicked out, I go back to the basics. I return to connecting with the spirit/s of place.

The important part is that we experience the magic for ourselves — not just through someone else’s words.

How To Connect to Spirit of Place

Key thing is to keep things simple.

Connecting to Sprit of Place is simple and just takes a bit of practice.

All that is required is to find a place to sit or stand where you feel comfortable.

Give yourself a little time to settle into the energy of the place you’re in.

There’s no need to ‘try’ to connect or force anything – just allow yourself to notice the natural elements of your surroundings.

Sensing the Energy of Place

Begin only with the intention to observe — nothing more. Just to notice, with curiosity.

· Let your senses settle into the sights, sounds and smells of the landscape

· Does this place feel fast or slow – maybe somewhere in between?

· Pay attention to how you are feeling — and where in your body you feel it

· Do you feel heavier? Lighter? More tired? Less tired?

· Is your mood changing in some way?

If you want to, you can note down anything you observe.

You may not have noticed or experienced anything at all and that’s fine too.

Sometimes it can take a few visits to tune in to a specific landscape’s energy.

Also, sometimes there may not be enough energy to connect with at all. Not everywhere has Spirit of Place.

Next Steps – Making Contact

Once you have spent time getting to know the energy of your chosen place, you can move things on by introducing yourself.

If you feel comfortable, you can say hello — either out loud or in your mind. Say who you are, why you’re there, and that you’re here to build a connection with honour and respect.

Leave a small offering of thanks — a sort of ‘I see you and I honour you’ for the spirits. A few drops of water onto the soil are usually enough.

The Continuing Path – Working with the Energy in Your Spirit of Place

Treat your connection with your sacred spiritual places like you would any new kinship. You take your cues from what you pick up every time you spend time together. Some places will be fizzing with energy that is buoyant and eager to connect and communicate with you. Other places might feel slower or quieter and take longer to allow you to fully connect.

If you approach Spirit of Place with respect and patience, there is every chance that you will eventually be able to work with its energies. Many magical practitioners choose to work with Spirit of Place in their magical work. It’s a rewarding and illuminating part of nature mysticism that can be part of your path for ever.

Bringing It All Together

Here’s one of the things I love most about what I do - nature magic doesn’t care if you’re 6 years old or 106. It’s not concerned with your dress size, your bank balance or how many followers you have on social media. (As I get older, I’m not so bothered about these things either, which helps too.)

Listening to your surroundings can reveal so much about your connection with the land, sea and skies. It is a timeless practice — one that doesn’t need fancy tools, a high budget, or a long drive to a sacred site.

You will become part of our planet’s acknowledged energy family. Eventually, we will become part of this land. The land will still be here, responding to what’s going on, long after we have all been returned to it.
